ASBESTOS AIR SAMPLING

AIR

Our knowledgeable and competent team performs sampling for asbestos fibres for the purpose of complying with the Alberta Health and Safety Occupational Exposure Limit. Air samples are taken prior to the start of the work (background samples), during the abatement activities (on a daily basis), and upon completion of the job (before the enclosure is dismantled). Personal occupational samples are also collected daily to ensure that the work is being performed without the release of fibres, and to make certain that workers are wearing appropriate respirators for the type of work. All air monitoring is conducted by competent personnel while following the methods specified in the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation (NIOSH Method 7400.

WHAT IS ASBESTOS?

what

Asbestos is the common name given to a group of naturally occurring mineral silicates that can be separated into flexible fibres. The name asbestos comes from the Greek word meaning unquenchable or indestructible. The main properties that make asbestos useful are its incombustibility, strength and flexibility when separated into fibres. It is also effective as a reinforcing or binding agent when combined with cement or plastic. Asbestos can be found in materials such as:

  • Building exteriors (e.g., cement siding panels, soffits, roof panels, mastics, stucco);
  • Flooring (e.g., vinyl asbestos tiles, sheet vinyl flooring, and floor leveling compound);
  • Ceilings (e.g., ceiling tiles, acoustic and stipple finishes, and plaster or drywall);
  • Walls (e.g., plaster or drywall joint compound, stippled finishes, and cement panels); and
  • Insulation (e.g., vermiculite, boilers, vessels, pipes, ducts, floors, ceilings and walls)

THE HAZARDS OF ASBESTOS

Asbestos is a hazardous building material that must be inhaled to cause disease. Intact and undisturbed asbestos presents no direct health hazard but does present a potential exposure hazard should fibres be released and inhaled. Asbestos-related diseases include asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

WHY TEST FOR ASBESTOS?

Once embedded in lung tissue, asbestos fibres may remain within the body for extended periods. It is important to test for the presence of asbestos before initiating any building repairs, improvements on structures or the demolition of buildings that were built prior to 1990.

We hired peter with certified asbestos removal for our home renovation project. He had the best price, and was very trustworthy. He was able to explain the quote and explain why and what we are being charged for. The other companies who provided us with their quotes did not give me the confidence, nor were they able to explain what we were being charged for. I highly recommend Peter and certified asbestos for you renovation needs. He will get the job done safely and within budget.
